The Autumnal equinox is the day when the periods of sunlight and darkness are equal at a reference point after the daylight has been shortening since the Summer solstice. It is considered the first day of autumn, which continues until the darkness reaches its greatest length at the Winter solstice.
Conventionally it is defined by reference in the Northern Hemisphere and the Tropic of Cancer, though in the Southern Hemisphere daylight and darkness wax and wane in an opposite pattern to the Northern, and the the north's autumnal equinox is the south's Vernal equinox.
